With the election of the anti-slavery Republicancandidate for president, Abraham Lincoln, southern states decided to secede from the Union. In April 1861, South Carolina soldiers fired on federal troops at Fort Sumter. After hearing of this, President Lincoln called upon states left in the Union and requested that each of them supply the United States army with troops. Civil War had come to the United States. |
